The Catacombs of Paris are a historic monument containing human remains. Do Not Touch

The bones are extremely fragile. It is strictly forbidden to touch the remains or the walls of the ossuary. This is a place of rest and must be respected.

Bag Policy

Only bags smaller than 40x30x20 cm are permitted. Suitcases, large backpacks, and motorcycle helmets are not allowed. There are no lockers or cloakroom facilities.

Photography

You may take photos for personal use, but the use of flash, tripods, and selfie sticks is strictly prohibited as it can damage the site and disturb other visitors.

No Food or Drink

To ensure the preservation of the site, eating and drinking are forbidden along the entire visitor route. Animals are also not permitted, with the exception of guide dogs.

Common questions about what is and isn't allowed

Is there a dress code?
There is no formal dress code, but we recommend dressing respectfully. Practically, you should wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes and bring a warm layer as the temperature is always 14°C (57°F).
Can I bring a stroller or baby carrier?
Strollers are not allowed due to the numerous stairs and narrow passages. Baby carriers are permitted and recommended for visitors with infants.
Why are large bags not allowed?
The tunnels are very narrow, and large bags can easily brush against and damage the fragile bone displays. The rule is in place for the preservation of the site and for visitor safety.
Are there security checks?
Yes, all visitors must go through a bag check at the entrance for security and to enforce the bag policy. There is also a check upon exiting to ensure no remains have been taken.
Is this visit appropriate for someone with claustrophobia?
The visit is not recommended for individuals who suffer from claustrophobia due to the narrow, enclosed underground passages. Please see our accessibility page for more health advisories.
